Cade leads them to to a corner where he had opened one of the metal drawers and pulled out papers. Kat looks the papers over. They are yellow and look fragile. Adalia slowly picks one up.
"The writing's faded, but some parts are readable," She says after a moment of scanning the paper.
Kat picks up a paper of her own and reads:
........everything is secure. The problem..........earlier has resolved itself.........ordered...
....levels spiked again...........believe the.......fighting. Chief says...impossible......I don't
believe......not much else......others don't like.....creepy, complex.......don't understand...
Kat shakes her head and puts the paper down, "Is any of this useful?"
Cade pulls a paper that was set aside, "This was on the bottom of the pile, and it's in the best condition."
Adalia puts her paper down and looks at him.
Cade clears his throat and reads, "Not much to say. Treat her as the Queen."
"Queen, the one we're looking for?" Adalia asks.
Cade shrugs, "Farther down it mentions a "she" looking at something to the south."
Kat thinks for a moment before saying, "Well, its best clue we have, but there is a lot of things south of here."
Cade nods, "Yes, and we can't look everywhere. The word after south is illegible, so we don't know if its just south or in a specific southern direction."
"Isn't the other town you were going to visit south of here?" Adalia points out.
Kat looks at Cade before nodding, "But that doesn't mean much."
"Its a place to start isn't it?" Adalia counters.
"You could think of it that way, but there is a reason we came here instead of that town," Cade replies.
    "What's wrong with that town?"
"The files on that town are old, probably from just after the original hunters. They don't say a word about what the town looked like the only reason we think its a town is because it's labeled as such in on of the pre-war maps our maps don't label it."
"What!? Hasn't someone been hunting there later and described it?" Adalia says startled.
"That's the weird part," Cade replies, face calm, "No activity has been in that town or surrounding area since, and I don't just mean Alteration activity. I'm talking about all activity, human and Alteration."
"In other words, we have no idea what is out there," Kat summarizes, "If we go out there we might just be walking into the Queen's nest."
Adalia thinks about this then says, "But we don't have much of a choice. We have no other clues."
Kat looks at Cade, who nods.
"Alright then, let's go," Kat commands.
Cade smiles and Adalia's eyes sparkle.

Purple Moon (HM30)

Blogger is throwing a fit on my tablet so I'm using laptop. Sorry if anything weird occurs on this post I can only change what I can see and not every problem (especially the spacing) doesn't show up in editing form. Anyway I will be busy tomorrow so you get this weeks post a little early.

Kat rolls her eyes, "How are you going to get back out."
Cade's voice comes from the blackness, "You guys can pull me up."
"And what would you do if we didn't have the means to do that?" Adalia replies.
    Cade laughs.
Kat watches as he picks up a torch and walks off. Then she asks, "Do you have a rope?"
Adaia nods, "But there's nothing to secure it to."
Kat looks around but only confirms what Adalia said. After a moment of silence, Cade speaks again.
"You guys need to come see this."
"And how do you suggest we do that," Adalia asks, "There will be no one left to bring us back up."
"There's one window down hear in a corner so you can't see the light coming in through it."
Kat still feels creepy about the hole, but she shrugs and jumps in with Adalia following her. Inside the hole is completely black with only a small amount of light being emitted from a corner of the room and the hole above them. But it was enough to see the huge vague shapes around the room.
Cade comes over to them with the torch. "We should each have one of these," he says, "a lot of stuff is lying around."
Kat raises an eyebrow skeptically, but Adalia passes out the torches, and she sees Cade wasn't lying. Broken containers were everywhere, the smallest was the size of a jar and the biggest could have held a person.
Kat looks at Cade, not wanting to look at the containers, "What did you want us to see?"
He lead them towards a little corner of the room where some metal cabinets were "There are papers in here we may as well look through them.

"Where should we start looking?" Adalia wonders.
Kat looks around the town, the buildings that are still standing are ones that Kat is not familiar with. She assumes some are bigger versions of the houses people live in now, but the other ones she could only guess.
"Any idea what these were used for?" Kat asks.
    Cade shrugs.
Adalia points at an odd-shaped building, "I once visited a building like that for a job. From what I researched, before the war people used them to worship."
"Well we don't know what's useful and what's not so we may as well look everywhere," Cade chuckles.
Kat nods, "True, Adalia you go check out that old worship building and the ones surrounding it. I'll search the big building with all the window spaces and Cade you get everything else."
Cade moans, "Why do I get the biggest piece."
"Because it was your idea to search everywhere," Adalia responds.
Cade sighs and Kat glares at him before heading towards the huge building.
All the glass was gone out of the windows, but you could see where it had been. Kat enters the building through one of these window spaces and finds herself in a hallway. The floor and ceiling are crumbling and so faded you can't tell what color they use to be. There isn't anywhere to go but down the hallway. Kat picks a direction and starts walking.
The hallway leads her to a set of stairs going to the second floor. The second floor had more doorways than the first floor, but there was nothing in the rooms beyond the doorways.
She is just about to give up and find her companions when she comes across a room that looks exactly like the rest, but there is a huge hole in the floor that leads into blackness.
Kat's skin crawls, and she feels unexpectedly anxious staring down the hole. Backing out of the room, she marks the door with her blades and turns to the nearest window. She whistles and waves her hands in the air. Once Kat thinks she waved long enough for them to see her, she goes to the first floor and finds Adalia and Cade as they were climbing through a window.
"Did you find anything?" Cade asks.
"Not sure but its not something normal for this place."
Kat leads them to the room with the hole. Ignoring her own feelings, she turns to the others for their opinions.
Cade crouches down and stares into the blackness. Adalia looks around the room.
"Whatever's down, there isn't like the rest of the building. There's no windows," Cade speaks.
"The room is relatively untouched, it wasn't made by something falling," Adalia adds.
Cade picks up a small piece of rubble and tosses it into the hole. After a moment, a sound rings out as it hits the ground.
"It's not a long way down, probably leads to the first floor," Cade calculates.
"So its nothing special," Adalia sighs.
Cade shakes his head, "The darkness bugs me. Do we have anything we can use for a light?"
Adalia pulls out several long skinny tubes, Torches. Cade raises an eyebrow and takes one.
"Sometimes my dogs get into a situation where I have to distract the Alteration," Adalia replies.
Cade shrugs before hitting the torches against the floor, causing them to flare with light. He drops it into the hole and watches it roll a couple feet before he jumps in himself.

Silias looks Kat over carefully, "You seem fine, and the medics haven't reported anything."
Cade smiles at their boss, and Kat rolls her eyes.
"Fine, you can go but take Adalia with you in case you get into trouble."
Kat bows forcing Cade to do the same, "Thank you."
Silias watches them walks off, then sighs, "Those two always get into trouble."
"Are you worried?" A new voice asks.
Silias turns to see a young man in a suit, "Magnus, I didn't know you were back."
Magnus smiles and tilts his head, "I only just returned, and it seems some interesting things have happened while I was away."
"Only you would find them interesting, I just find it annoying."
"Which brings me back to my question: are you worried about them?"
Silias gives a cold stare to Magnus while taking in his light hair and innocent expression, "I hope that you don't think that mask of yours works on me I've seen you slaughter too many Alterations."
Silias walks off, and Magnus chuckles, his face becoming much colder, "You are a perceptive one, no wonder you're still alive. You better enjoy life while you can, because as soon as the order is given, you'll all be dead."
The bones in his left arm squirm, and he puts his right hand on top of them to settle them down, "but there is no need to be impatient, the Queen will get her revenge."

Kat gets off her bike before studying the area. Cade whistles, "Now this is something you don't see every day."
Before them, the abandoned town was in ruin. It was obvious that there had been lots of battles fought here. The town was old probably as old as Alterations, but there was no sign of new life. The town was silent and hauntingly still. Kat felt as if she should walk softly and speak quietly.
"This place is seriously creepy," Adalia whispers coming to stand next to Kat.
Her dogs start sniffing the air but then sit down at Adalia's feet, while being as far away from Kat as they could.
"So what does that mean," Cade asks watching the broken buildings.
"It means they don't smell anything dangerous," Adalia responds.
"But we should still be careful," Kat warns.
Adalia nods, "So what exactly are we looking for?"
All three are silent for a moment before Cade says as if its a question, "Something that doesn't look right."
Adalia sighs and Kat rolls her eyes.

Kat walks into the room where the technicians work. A man greets her.
"I surprised you came to see us, not many field hunters think about us."
Kat looks around the room while replying, "You gather information so the best place to look for info would be here."
The technician nods, "We have set aside a room for you. It has a computer and some paper documents."
He leads her to the room. Which holds a table and chair and a board to write on, plus a computer of to one side and boxes which are stacked against the wall.
"If you need anything else let us know," He says.
Kat nods and the technician closes the door. Kat sighs and opens a random box, inside are folders filled with papers.
Not knowing what else to do, she pulls out folders and looks through them. They contain information on past Alterations: where they were seen, who fought them, what powers they had, etc. She pays more attention to the higher level files, checking to see if there was anything useful.
After several hours she has gone through most of the boxes and hasn't found anything of use. Sighing, she stares at the papers gathered before her. The most common Alterations were of a B or C level, the next was A and D, with the rarest being E.
There are only four-level E's out of the twenty or so boxes she had opened so far. Kat picks up the papers connected to the E's and puts them on the board.
"Every time an E has shown up lots of people have died, including hunters," She mutters, "Maybe the Queen is an E."
Putting all thoughts of E's aside, Kat turns her attention to the D papers. It's then that she notices that all higher-level Alterations were old. Curious, she looks through the papers again and confirms her thought. Not all old Alterations were high level, but all high levels were old.
There is a knock, and the door and Kat looks up to see Cade. Opening the door, she says, "What a surprise. I don't think you've ever voluntarily set foot in this place."
Cade smiles, "I came to see how you were doing."
Kat sighs, "I've learned some things, but none of them are particularly helpful. I think the Queen might be a level E and she's probably old but other than that I've got nothing."
Cade looks at the board where papers containing the E's, and several D's are placed, "Have you grouped them by area."
    Kat shakes her head.
"Let's do that then, we might get a starting point from that."
Kat asks for a map, and after the technicians bring her one, they start mapping. They go through the rest of the boxes and soon they have a map with red dots for E and blue dots for D.
"The biggest clusters are around these two abandoned towns," Kat points out.
"Then we have a lead. All that's left is to get Silias to let go back into the field," Cade replies.
