Half Moon 5

    Kat stares at him. Not sure if she heard correctly, "A report of an Alteration that talks."

    He nods, "It has been categorized as a D2 or 3. It showed up recently, and as far as we can tell, it's smart. It only shows up when it likes the situation, and it covers its tracks."
    "So you don't know what type of Alteration it is."
    "Correct. You are going into the town as a newcomer with Cade. We have a house ready, and we don't expect you to be back the day after you get there. The town people haven't been told anything so please keep that in mind when you choose your roles."
    "Anything else?"
    Silias thought for a moment, "The town is near the forest, and most of the work revolves around that. No one there has a lot of money. There are some better-off families, but they would be more of a middle class around here."
    "Do they have a school?"
    "Thinking of becoming a teacher? There are only enough kids for one teacher and, sadly, they already have one."
    "But I'm sure a tutor could be useful. Until they figure out that Cade can work."
    Silias laughs, "You are a tricky one."
    Kat stands, "If you don't mind. I would like to inform Cade of our assignment."
    He follows her example, "Of course."
    She leads him to the door, and just as she is going to shut it, he speaks, "Oh I almost forgot, You have a week to settle everything, and the Alteration takes people away from the town. No one hears them if they scream or sees them leave. They just vanish."
    "Thank you for telling me," She says, closes the door and sighs, "Now to find headache meds."

    Cade opens his door and it's obvious that he just woke up. His hair is messy and the last dregs of sleep are in the corners of his eyes. "Did you get lonely?" He asks Kat.
    She rolls her eyes, "No, I'm here to tell you about our new job."
    He raises an eyebrow and steps aside so that she can come in, "And what is so important that you had to tell me about it now."
    Kat repeats what Silias then explains her plan. When she's done, he sighs and agrees to follow it.

Half Moon 4

    "Are you sure that is what it said?"  Silias asks.

    Kat nods, "I'm sorry we couldn't find any more information."

    Silias sighs and heads toward the door with the sun on it. "It's alright Kat, you did what you could with what you had. I will tell the Council, go get some dinner and rest. We will contact you if  anything else comes up."

    Kat nods and turns to Cade, "Let's get some food."

    Cade leads the way to the cafeteria, knowing that it isn't the time to make a joke. They are one of the only ones there when they arrive. Cade gets them food while Kat sits down at a table. He puts food in front of her before sitting down next to her.

    "How are you feeling," He asks.

    She shrugs, "Fine a little disappointed, and my head is throbbing."

    He chuckles, "Well, there isn't much we can do. I'm still surprised there were that many Alterations in one spot. I know that they tell us that they didn't get all of the colonies, but I never expected to run into one."

    Kat's eye glaze slightly over "They are all over. They gather because they have too."

    Her eyes return to normal, and a deep unsettling feeling settles in her mind like she missed something.

    "Well, I suppose you could be right. Either way, it's still surprising."

    Kat rubs head, "I'm going to my room. My head has started pounding harder."

    She stands up and leaves the room, leaving Cade to eat her untouched food. She gets into the elevator and pushes the button for her floor. She rubs her head against the pulsing pain. The elevator dings, and she stumbles into the hallway. She unlocks her door and collapses on to her bed.

    The next morning a pounding on her door wakes her up. Grumbling she walks over and opens the door mid knock.

    "What?" She growls at the man waiting there.

    "Uh...Silias wants to see you."

    "Go tell Cade and tell him that if he doesn't do it, then I will mess with his bike."

    She slams the door and is about to climb into bed when there is another knock. She grinds her teeth before opening the door again only to see Silias instead of the man from before. She sighs, and motions for him to come in then proceeds to make herself something warm to drink.

    "What do you want Silias?"

    "I have a job for you."

    "My head is pounding. Go ask someone else."

    "I would, but according to the locals this Alteration talks."

Sorry I couldnt post on friday my family and I visited some hot springs and the wifi in our room was spotty at best and not existant most of the time.

    "I thought that most of the colonies were wiped out after the War," Cade says startled.

    Kat gives him a pointed look, "Cade, were you not paying attention in class when they explained that the Bio-bomb caused so many Alterations that there was no way that we got  all of the colonies."

    Cade doesn't say anything, and Kat rolls her eyes before hopping off her bike and walking towards the little dots. Cade catches up with her before she reaches the first Alteration.

    "So how are we going to do this?" He asks.

    "Find the first one that can talk and question it."

    Cade nods, and they begin there search. They would ask questions to the Alterations, and if they didn't seem to understand they killed them. They had gone through about thirty before they found one that seemed to understand. But it doesn't say anything, and they move on.

    The sun is high in the sky when they find one that answers them. But he would go around in circles with his answers

    "Who is the queen?"

    "Someone you should be afraid of."

    "Where is this queen?"

    "You won't find her until it's too late."

    Kat becomes frustrated and kills it and searches for another talking Alteration but were unsuccessful. As the sun set, they went back to the City.

    Kat watches as Cade approaches her.
   "So what did you want to talk to me about?" He asks.

    "We have a job to do. We have to figure out who this Queen is that the Alteration talked about."
    Cade looks at her, "Is something wrong, you sound stressed."
    Kat rubs her temples, "No. I'm fine I just don't like doing this."
    "Well, it's hard when we don't have anything to go on besides a title."
    Kat sighs, "Come on we are wasting time."
    They leave the building and grab their bikes.
    "Where should we look first," Cade asks.
    "The thing was a Death Alteration. Maybe if we find another one it will know what the Queen is."
    "So to the desert then."
    She nods and races off. The landscape slowly changes. Rocks gradually outnumber the plant life then the rock outcrops become flatter. The temperature rises as the land becomes more desolate and unforgiving. Kat doesn't talk to Cade, and eventually, her thoughts start to wander. The rock jut-outs flash by, each taking a thought with it. A tune comes from the depths of her mind, gradually growing in strength until it is the only thing she focuses on. Words soon accompany the tune and Kat hears a soft voice singing in her head:

In the No Moon,

Blood has its greatest chance.

Then comes the Crescent Moon,

To begin the cycle.

The Half Moon is next,

And what is lost starts to return.

Last of all is the Full Moon,

Showing the scales have changed.

    "Kat!" Cade shouts like he's been doing it a while, "Look."

    Kat stops her bike and looks at the ridge Cade was referring to. Little things dot the land. Her glasses identify them as Alterations.

    "Looks like we've found what we were looking for," Cade says.
    "Yes," Kat replies, "A colony of Alterations its probably been there since the War."
